University of Cambridge International Examinations
At the Oasis International School the students are evaluated according to the University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) criteria. CIE qualifications are available in over 150 countries and recognised worldwide.
Examinations and testing at the Primary School (4 to 11 years)
The Cambridge International Progression Tests are available for Stages 3 – 6 to help schools monitor student progress. The tests are not pass/fail and do not lead to a qualification; instead they provide a benchmark for schools calibrated against an international cohort. They are designed to provide information for teachers, students and parents about the progress being made and the strengths and weaknesses of individuals and groups.
The Cambridge International Primary Programme Achievement Test is for students at the end of their final year of primary education. It is available in three core subjects: English, mathematics and science. The test is marked by teachers. CIE will moderate a sample of scripts, process the results and issue students with Statements of Achievement. The test is available in June and November each year and it can be taken at any point within a fixed period of time. Samples of the achievement tests:
Examinations and testing at the Lower Secondary School (11 to 14 years)
Cambridge Checkpoint tests are available in English, Mathematics and Science and are to be offered at three times during the year. The service is aimed at students of approximately 14 years of age studying mid-secondary curriculums. The tests cover all major areas of learning required in the first years of an international secondary education. It is these topics and sub-topics which provide the framework for feedback on each student.
Examinations and testing at the Upper Secondary School (14 to 16 years)
CIE is the world’s largest provider of international qualifications for 14-19 year-olds. The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) has been designed for 14 to 16 year olds. Students who obtain an IGCSE qualification from Cambridge are prepared for further academic success, including progression to A and AS Level study, and equip students will the skills needed for immediate employment. IGCSE is recognised as evidence of ability by academic institutions and employers around the world.
In IGCSE programme students are assessed through a combination of written examinations, orals, practicals and projects or coursework. Grading is on an eight-point scale (A* – G). Examination session takes place twice a year, in May/June and in October/November.
Examinations and testing at the Advanced Secondary School (16 to 18 years)
The General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level), or A Level, is the ‘gold standard’ of CIE qualifications. It has exactly the same value in admitting students to all universities as its UK equivalent. It is also accepted as an entry qualification by universities of the European Union, on a par with the French Baccalaureat, the German Abitur, etc.
A Level examinations are usually taken after 13 years of education and are based on approximately 360 hours of guided learning normally over a two year period. A Levels are highly specialised and a student will normally take three subjects, although occasionally exceptional students take four.
There are five passing grades (A – E). Minimum matriculation requirements are at least two pass grades. University courses for which there is not strong demand might accept students with these grades, but typical UK university entrance requirements are closer to three passes at grade C for academic courses in established universities. Very popular courses will often require higher grades. For example, medical schools in the UK often require grades of AAB and the highly selective universities of Cambridge and Oxford ask for at least AAB.
Cambridge International A Levels are taken throughout the world, sometimes as the national examinations of certain Commonwealth countries (such as Singapore and Mauritius), sometimes within International Schools and sometimes in bi-lingual government schools alongside the national exams.
Good A Level grades can be a key to admission for all the world’s major anglophone universities. University course credit and advanced standing is often available in countries such as the USA and Canada, where entrance to university takes place after 12 years of education. Good grades in carefully chosen A Level subjects can result in up to one full year of credit.
Developing a love for and understanding of God in each child is an essential goal of Oasis International School. Daily prayer is an important feature of the school’s spiritual life. Students gather for collective prayer once a day. Spiritual growth is supported by our integrated character – education programme, which weaves universal moral values into daily, monthly and yearly activities.
While attention to academics is a priority, the cultivation of the individual and collective character of our students is of equal importance. As part of a school – wide approach, faculty and staff promote moral values through classroom instruction, students’ activities, school assemblies and special events.
Islamic and Quranic studies
In Islamic studies, we follow the Iqra Curriculum of Tasneema Gazi and Abidullah Gazi of the Iqra Educational trust, Chicago. This curriculum is divided into 4 categories at each level:
- Faith and Worship,
- Life of the Prophet,
- Teachings of The Quran and
- Islamic social sciences.
Its approach is international where the stress is on “transformation through knowledge.” The student learns to think, reason and apply the values learnt to every aspect of his life and in turn develop a God conscious personality which is the real purpose of Islamic Education.
At Oasis we believe that authentic knowledge of the Koran and its true understanding with positive feelings about oneself and ones identity will lead to socially responsible peace-loving individuals, God-willing. Besides we also endeavour to give the young learners an Islamic perspective of all sciences learnt in regular classroom so that there is no compartmentalization of knowledge and all forms of knowledge are integrated, respected, loved and recognized as beneficial.
